Watch LRCC’s Cancer Survivors Day Celebration

Tuesday, June 14 2011

More than 250 guests attended Lakeland Regional Cancer Center’s National Cancer Survivors Day celebration on Sunday, June 5 at LRCC.  This year’s theme was “Hope Blooms.”

After a welcome by LRCC Administrator Kim Walker, and a blessing by LRMC Chaplain Brian Hurley, attendees were entertained and uplifted by keynote speaker Dan Shapiro, Ph.D., psychologist, author, playwright and cancer survivor, with his hysterical and moving one-act-play, “A Funny Thing Happened on My Way to Chemotherapy.”  He is also a consultant to the television shows Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice and is a nationally recognized speaker.

Attendees also enjoyed masterful piano playing by 14-year-old Arielle and 12-year-old Joseph who dedicated their performances to their grandmother Rosalia Villaruel, an LRCC patient and ovarian cancer survivor.

In addition, those in attendance participated in a butterfly craft, a butterfly release in the healing garden, a tour of the LRCC’s new wing, sipped on coffee from LRCC’s new Starbucks, and viewed the Lilly Art Collection.
