Start the New Year By Breathing Easier

Monday, December 7 2009

Lakeland Regional Medical Center is dedicated to providing exceptional healthcare.  To that end, LRMC has made a pledge to become a completely tobacco-free campus on January 1, 2010.

Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death in the United States, and each year, 28,700 Florida residents die due to a tobacco-related disease.  As a healthcare provider, LRMC must be committed to providing a healthy environment for everyone it serves, both inside and out.

Beginning January 1, 2010,  firm commitment to create a tobacco-free, and thus healthier, environment for everyone is being made.  The use of tobacco products of any kind, including cigarettes, cigars, pipes, chewing tobacco, etc., will not be allowed on any LRMC property, including parking lots and parking garages.  Those wishing to use such products must completely leave LRMC-owned property.  These locations include not just the main hospital campus, but outlying offices as well, such as Lakeland Regional Orthopedics Associates and Lakeland Regional Outpatient Rehabilitation on Harden Boulevard, LRMC Foundation offices on Kentucky Avenue, and all other off-site locations.  Lakeland Regional Cancer Center has been tobacco-free since its opening.

The new policy will be enforced for all visitors, patients and employees.  Smoking cessation aids will be made available to all LRMC employees who wish to quit, and information on smoking cessation classes will be made available to all who inquire.
