Older Americans Reveal A Glimpse of their Own History During Quilt Show
Friday, May 27 2011
On Friday, May 20, the Lakeland Regional Foundation hosted a Quilt Show through LRMC’s Senior Care Club in celebration of our older Americans who, in turn, came bearing the fabric of their youth along with their finest stories. Among some of the most beautiful and creative quilts at the show were displayed by the following individuals:
- Connie Bovay, a Lakeland resident, who proudly showcased a quilt that was made for her grandfather’s crib with scraps available after the civil war. She describes it as “perfectly imperfect” and treasures the heirloom that was generously passed down to her.
- Arlene Kiefer, the winner of the events’ “Healing Arts Award,” showcased a colorful and worn quilt that was hand-stitched by her father-in-law when he was only eight years old and overcoming a long-term illness.
- Mary Hoover, who at the age of 83, hand-stitched her first quilt using a difficult “cathedral window” technique. During the event, this quilt was a true show-stopper and conversation piece.
The event was hosted in collaboration with the Administration on Aging’s (AOA) National Older American’s Month festivities and featured a host of fun activities for our senior residents, along with their family and friends. Those who attended put together their own “quilter’s block” and many tried their hand at bowling – but not in the traditional sense. The Foundation had a television and a Nintendo Wii system set up for attendees to try “virtual bowling.”
The purpose of this event was to show our appreciation and support to our seniors as they continue to enrich our community, as well as connect them to the resources available for them at our hospital,” said Holly Parrish, Foundation Development Coordinator.
This is just one example of how Lakeland Regional celebrates our senior residents throughout the year.
