LRCC Surgeons on the Cutting Edge of Robotic Surgery: Better Options for Melanoma Patients
Wednesday, March 16 2011
Lakeland Regional Cancer Center continues to be on the cutting edge in the area of robotic surgery, offering patients life-changing procedures with a minimally invasive option. Helen Chan, MD, and Manuel Molina, MD, both surgical oncologists at LRCC, became the first surgeons in the area to utilize the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System to remove cancerous lymph nodes on patients suffering from melanoma.
“This surgical technique is far superior to other minimally invasive options available, and we are thrilled to offer it to our patients. Because of the less invasive nature of the surgery, our patients are experiencing a shorter recovery time and have a significantly smaller chance to develop infection,” said Dr. Chan.
When patients take advantage of this procedure at LRMC, they will greatly benefit from the less invasive nature of the robotic system, including:
- Reduced trauma to the body
- Reduced blood loss
- Less post-operative pain and discomfort
- Faster recovery and return to daily activities
- Less risk of infection
- Shorter hospital stay
- Less scarring
“We are proud to be one of the few cancer centers doing these kinds of surgeries with the robot,” said Dr. Molina. “By performing this surgery, in particular, using the da Vinci system, our patients are afforded an option that will all but take away the added worry of recovery.”
