Lakeland Regional Takes Proactive Measures to Fight the Flu

Thursday, January 17 2013

At Lakeland Regional, the health and safety of patients and staff is our top priority. This year, influenza (flu) has been identified across the state of Florida and within our community. Many of us know of people who are experiencing flu-like illnesses or are recovering from them.

Most of the illnesses associated with this virus have been mild. But for others with underlying chronic medical conditions, the flu can cause more severe illness. Taking proactive measures to fight the flu, Lakeland Regional is continuing to offer employees the flu vaccination free-of-charge. In addition, we are encouraging staff and visitors to:

  • Stay home if ill with fever (over 100 degrees), sore throat, runny nose and body aches until fever has been gone for 24 hours.
  • Seek evaluation from a medical provider if symptoms persist or become more severe.
  • Advise others to:

- Wash their hands frequently with soap and warm water, particularly beforeeating or touching their faces.-  Cover their noses and mouths with a tissue when sneezing or coughing, thenwash their hands immediately.-  Avoid touching their eyes, noses and mouths.

Lakeland Regional emphasizes hand washing and frequent use of hand-sanitizing gels. Commonly touched objects and high-traffic areas are sanitized frequently, and we are taking other precautions, such as: having patients who present with upper respiratory symptoms wear face masks and offering patients individual tissue containers.

We recognize that visitors are an integral part of patient healing. However, individuals who are ill are highly encouraged not to visit the hospital until they are clear of all symptoms. In addition, it is recommended that individuals, especially children, avoid visiting the hospital unless it is necessary. In our clinics, patients who are experiencing flu-like symptoms are asked to call ahead to postpone their appointments until they are healthy again.

As experts at LRMC continue to work closely with public health officials to ensure the health and safety of all of our patients, staff and visitors, we appreciate our community’s support in this important effort.
