Lakeland Regional Cancer Center Hosts Cancer Survivors Day Celebration

Thursday, May 19 2011

The community is invited to attend a National Cancer Survivors Day celebration on Sunday, June 5 at Lakeland Regional Cancer Center, 3525 Lakeland Hills Blvd. Registration opens at noon; and the program is from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m.  This year’s theme is “Hope Blooms.”

After a welcome by LRCC Administrator Kim Walker, and a blessing by LRMC Chaplain Brian Hurley, attendees will hear from keynote speaker Dan Shapiro, Ph.D., psychologist, author, playwright and cancer survivor.  He is also a consultant to the television shows Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice.  Dr. Shapiro will share his hysterical and moving one-act-play, “A Funny Thing Happened on My Way to Chemotherapy.” He is a nationally recognized speaker and author, and will participate in a book signing immediately following the event.

The 2011 Nurses of Hope Award recipients sponsored by the Oncology Nursing Society of Polk County will be recognized followed by a butterfly release in the Healing Gardens.  There will also be a display of the Lilly Art Collection.  Through the Lilly Art Collection, people from the United States and Puerto Rico expressed their feelings about cancer through art and narrative.  The result was 600 works of art submitted by people diagnosed with cancer, their families, friends, caregivers and health care providers.  The artwork is inspiring those on their cancer journeys.

Finally, at the conclusion of the celebration, attendees are welcome to participate in a tour of the LRCC’s new wing.  The 27,000 square foot expansion housing offices, exam rooms and treatment rooms nearly doubles the current size and will open for business on June 13.

Refreshments will be served and an interactive art project will be available before and after the program.

This event is free and open to the public, but registration is required. Cancer survivors, their family and friends, oncology professionals and volunteers are especially encouraged to attend. Please call (863) 687-1400 to register.

Special thanks to the Lakeland Garden Club for refurbishing the Butterfly Garden and the Ridge Orchid Society for the donation of orchids.
