Lakeland Regional Cancer Center Awarded ACRO Accreditation for Excellence in Radiation Oncology
Friday, June 22 2012
Lakeland Regional Cancer Center has been awarded a full, three-year re-accreditation by the American College of Radiation Oncology (ACRO) for physics, administration and medical review in Radiation Oncology. Through its standards for accreditation, which were made more stringent in 2010, ACRO strives to ensure the highest quality care for radiation therapy patients.
The prestigious accreditation is the result of intensive review by a team of board certified radiation oncologists, radiation physicists, and onsite reviews of Lakeland Regional Cancer Center on March 30 and April 4. In addition to the onsite review, ACRO’s team of experts reviewed a random sampling of LRCC’s charts.
“Thank you to the individuals at Lakeland Regional Cancer Center who provided leadership for this survey, and kudos to our great radiation oncology staff for demonstrating excellence in action every single day,” said Kim Walker, LRCC Administrator. “We were praised by the surveyors as an exemplary program — one of the best they have seen,” said Walker.
LRCC provides the latest radiation therapies to aggressively treat cancer, including:
- Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) which delivers high doses of radiation directly to cancer cells in a very targeted and conformal way.
- Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) which is pretreatment imaging that helps deliver radiation therapy more precisely to tumors that shift as a result of organ motion and involuntary movement.
- Accelerated Partial-Breast Irradiation which is a tumor site-specific breast cancer treatment delivering radiation from inside the breast directly to the area where cancer is most likely to recur.
- Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) which delivers a highly precise concentrated dose of radiation directly to tumor tissue utilizing sophisticated imaging and three dimensional mapping.
