Florida is being hit hard by the Flu… Is it possible to avoid the flu or is it a losing battle?!

FluShot

Influenza (flu) has been identified across the state of Florida and within our community.  Many of us know of people who are recovering from the flu or flu-like illnesses.  Is it really possible to avoid getting the flu this year?  According to LRMC’s own Dr. Daniel Haight, associate VP of community Health and USF associate professor of infectious diseases, you can decrease your chances of becoming ill by simply following a few recommendations that you know very well:

  • Keep your fingers away from your eyes
  • Be sure to wash your hands and cough/sneeze properly

What if you have the flu…are there ways to help decrease the chance of spreading it? The answer is yes.

  • Make sure you stay home if ill with fever, sore throat, runny nose and body aches until fever has been gone for 24 hours.  A fever is usually an oral temperature of over 100.4 F
  • Seek evaluation from a medical provider if symptoms persist or become more severe
  • Advise those around you to wash their hands and get vaccinated

For additional advice and recommendations, visit our website at www.LRMC.com or view recommendations found on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website (www.cdc.gov ).
