Vice President, Human Resources Services and Retail Operations
Jeffery Payne serves as Vice President, Human Resources Services and Retail Operations for Lakeland Regional Health Systems. His leadership capabilities, talent for building consensus among teams and engaging and energetic personality have allowed him to develop and execute human resources policies and programs that support the overall strategic direction of the organization. Under Jeffery’s leadership, LRHS is becoming a leaner, higher performing organization that is positioned to continue to meet the challenges and demands unique to healthcare.
With over two decades of experience in human resource management in healthcare, Jeffery brings a solid foundation of experience and insight to LRHS. He is responsible for employee and labor relations, benefits and compensation, worker’s compensation, occupational health, succession planning and performance management. He also oversees non-clinical employee education and development, volunteer services and retail operations and a staff of approximately 50 employees.
Since joining LRHS, Jeffery has made several significant accomplishments, including the comprehensive redesign of the $36 million employee health plan and creation of a culture of health, which includes employee health assessments, rewards for healthy behavior and employee health education and events. He also initiated a compensation plan redesign, which featured significant modifications to LRMC’s 401(a) and 403(b) retirement plans. These changes have increased voluntary participation in the 403(b) plan and are expected to save $600,000 annually. In addition, he introduced new retirement savings options, including a 457(b) plan in 2008 and a 403(b) Roth plan in 2010.
Jeffery also leads labor relations for the executive team. In August 2010, he led the renegotiation of the UFCW contracts, achieving significant savings from the contracted wage and benefit concession items. He also played a key role in implementing several technological advances including an upgrade to manager and employee self-serve and remote access modules, a new staff scheduling module and a new time and attendance system.
Prior to joining LRHS, Jeffery served as the corporate director for human resources for Palmetto Health, at the time a three-hospital system headquartered in Columbia, South Carolina. He also served as the director of human resources for Baptist Medical Center Easley and as a corporate human resources executive with RH Macy & Company’s Atlanta division for eight years. In addition, he is a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel (active duty 1978-1984, reservist 1984-2002).
